The 13th Annual Semmes Azalea Festival, sponsored by Semmes Chamber of Commerce, is a family-friendly, free-admission event scheduled for Saturday, March 14, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on the campus of Mary G. Montgomery High School in Semmes. Among the activities are a charity run; a car, truck and bike show; a plant sale; stage performances; a children's fun area; arts and crafts; food vendors and more.
Visitors to the Azalea Festival can take advantage of the large plant sale, which benefits the MGM Football Booster Club. Local nurseries (for which Semmes is well-known) have donated several varieties of shrubs and flowers for the fundraiser. A display highlighting the azalea and its history will also be featured.
The Semmes BIG Challenge 5K Run will benefit the Semmes Boys & Girls Club; more than 200 runners are expected to participate in this year's race. The Azalea Festival Car Show will showcase approximately 60 classic and custom cars, bikes and trucks. Proceeds from the show go to Donate Life, an organization committed to increasing organ, eye and tissue donations.
The main stage will support various acts including dance performances, church choirs and school bands. And the children's area will include pony rides, a petting zoo, bungee jumps and train rides. Among the many booths will be those of AT&T Telephone Pioneers, who will be selling cookbooks and Semmes Woman's Club, who will be selling note cards and giving away information.
