Butterfly Tree in home of Gayle & Lonn Spencer is in memory of their son, Charlie. The Spencer home is on the Semmes Christmas Tour of Homes December 13
The 2014 Semmes Christmas Tour of Homes and Tasting Tour is Saturday, December 13, 3-7 p.m.
One of the homes on the Tour is that of Gayle and Lonn Spencer, and one of their trees is quite unique. Twelve years ago, their 21-year-old son Charlie, an Auburn student who'd been a track and cross-country runner at Phillips Preparatory and Murphy High schools, died of a congenital heart defect.
Beginning the next Christmas, Gayle Spencer started adding butterflies to her tree. "The butterflies," she said, "are the symbol for the Compassionate Friends Organization for bereaved parents."
