The senior citizens at Grand Bay-St. Elmo Community Center, 11610 Highway 90 W., have a few special occasions coming up. On Wednesday, February 3, 10:30 a.m., the Back Porch Boys from Semmes will present a musical program, and on February 5, 10:30 a.m., the Alma Bryant High School drama students will perform. On Tuesday, February 9, the seniors are hosting a Pancake Brunch and Mardi Gras Bingo. Participants are asked to dress in their Mardi Gras outfits wiith lots of beads. "The ones with the most Mardi Gras spirit will be crowned king and queen," said site director Diana Ankney.
Mobile Arc will celebrate its 34th Annual Mobile Association of Reveling Cavaliers Parade at 1 p.m. on Thursday, February 4 at the Gordon Smith Center. This year's theme is "Decades," and floats will be decorated to reflect eras such as the 1920s or 1770s. Mel Showers and Rose Ann Haven are returning as Grand Marshals, and Darwin Singleton is returning as the Reveling Cavalier. Parade participants will include Mobile Arc's Royalty Courts, Goodwill Easter Seals cheer squad and Kaleidoscope program, Mobile Police and Fire Departments, high school marching bands and many other service organizations.
On Thursday, February 4, the Government Street Forum presenter will be Fred Rendfrey, Director of Downtown Economic Development Alliance. "Wings for Autism®" is coming to Mobile Regional Airport on Saturday, February 20 at approximately 5:30 p.m. This is one of the Arc’s newest national initiatives, and The Arc of Baldwin County, The Arc of Clarke County, Mobile Arc and the Autism Society of Alabama, in conjunction with American Airlines, are providing the program. This event is an airport “rehearsal” designed to alleviate some of the stress that families who have a member with autism spectrum disorders or other intellectual or developmental disabilities experience when traveling by air. Travis Rayner, president of the Mobile Bay Area Backyard Chicken Club said that more than 100 chicken enthusiasts attended the Breed Showcase recently. Approximately 50 breeds were represented. He said that some dozen new families joined the club. The next meeting will be February 28, 3 p.m. at the Jon Archer Agricultural Center on Schillinger Road North.
