"Cheers to Children" Charity Auction to benefit the Child Advocacy Center of Mobile is Monday, July 27, 6-8:30 p.m. at Cafe 615 on Dauphin Street in downtown Mobile. The event features a wine tasting, hors d'oeuvres from Cafe 615 and the music of the Harrison McGinnis Trio. The $35 tickets are available at Cafe 615 and at the Child Advocacy Center. The 2nd Annual Kids' Day event is Saturday, July 25, 2-5 p.m. at Tillman's Corner Community Center, 5055 Carol Plantation Road. Planned are a talent show for youngsters 5-18 years old, a Petting Zoo, Bounce Houses, McGruff Crime Dog, food, face-painting and entertainment. Volunteers of America Southeast 6th Annual Operation Backpack continues with school supply collection until August 4. Needed are basic school supplies and book bags. (See earlier post in this blog for complete list of supplies.) The collection will help children in need, as identified by Mobile County Department of Human Resources and area churches, to start the school year right. On July 22, 9 a.m.-noon, Wonderful Wednesday at Bellingrath Gardens and Home will be a "Kids' Gulf Discovery Day." Children will learn all about the environment of our region and will meet the Winged Ambassadors and their fabulous birds (see earlier story on this blog.) Dauphin Island Sea Lab's Discovery Hall Program "Art-Sea Discovery" for 8-13 year olds is July 24, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. The day-long camp features an exploration of Dauphin Island, its ecology and its wildlife, and art projects inspired by it. Dauphin Island Sea Lab has two Salt Marsh Excursions left this summer, July 22 and July 30. Open to the public, these excursions promise fun for the whole family. Participants can enjoy a a thorough investigation of the estuary wetlands known as salt marshes. The Dauphin Island West End Beach movies at dark on Thursday, July 23 are "Atlantis--The Lost Empire" and on Friday, July 24, "The Maze Runner."
On Saturday, July 25, 8 a.m.-4 p.m., the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is sponsoring an "About Boating Safety" event at the Dauphin Island Coast Guard Station on the east end of the Island. "Peter Pan," staged by members of Explorer Post 149, will play at Chickasaw Civic Theatre, 801 Iroquois Street, July 24-26. Annie Miller, Children's Pastor at Fountain of Life, 1277 Jubilee Drive in Saraland, said that a "Family Experience" is scheduled at the church on the weekend of July 24-26. On Friday, the event begins at 6:30 p.m.; on Saturday, 5:30 p.m. and Sunday, 10 a.m. Registration/pre-service activities begin one hour before services. On Thursday, July 23 at 4 p.m., the Fun-n-Games afternoon will be held at the Coastal Response Center, 7385 Highway 188, Coden. The event promises "Great fun with family and friends, young and old. Great gathering for teens" and will include "board games, cards, puzzles and more." Admission is$2 at door and children 12 and younger enter free. The Fifty Plus Club will hold its semi-annual bingo fundraiser on Sunday, July 26, (immediately following 11 a.m. mass) at St. Philip Neri Community Center, corner of Laurendine Road and Dauphin Island Parkway, Theodore. All playing guests will receive a free hot-dog-with-all-the-trimmings lunch. In addition to bingo, there'll be cake auctions and sales, Split the Pot and free door prizes. The Kayak Classic Fishing Tournament in Bayou La Batre is Saturday, August 1. Sponsored by the BLB Chamber of Commerce, the event will begin with a 6 a.m. shotgun start at BLB City Docks. The Chamber is looking for businesses, organizations or individuals to purchase Sponsor Packages ranging in cost from $50 to $1,000. Also needed are prizes, giveaways and in-kind donations. The Chickasaw Chieftain Football Team is hosting a Shrimp Boil fundraiser on Saturday, August 1, 1-5 p.m. in the Chickasaw High School cafeteria. Tickets are $20 each and can be purchased in the front office on the CHS campus on Chieftain Way. This is an all-you-can-eat event that includes shrimp, sausage, corn and potatoes. It's also a good opportunity to meet the Chickasaw Chieftain football team and coaches.

On Monday, August 3, the Women's Club of Satsuma will celebrate Dog Days of Summer with a hot dog luncheon. The club meeting will be at 10 a.m. with lunch at 11 a.m. at Satsuma Community Center. "Our club is continuing to raise funds to build a chapel at Steele Creek Park. Camp Bluebird is October 14-16 at Camp Grace in Mobile, AL. This is an adult camp for cancer patients 18 years or older who have been diagnosed or treated for cancer. Campers enjoy a time of relaxation in a quiet comfortable cabin with others who understand
