On Friday, February 27, 2015, the husband and wife team of Dumas and Delores McLaney were honored by SouthWest Mobile County Chamber of Commerce as Citizens of the Year 2014. The couple contributed many hours this year (and in past years) to the benefit of their neighbors and the betterment of the community at large.
Dumas McLaney is leader of the County Line Band and presents two senior dances at Tillman's Corner Community Center each month. Delores helps with that event, and together they give their time to raise funds for cancer patients, for families in need, for funeral expenses of community members and for Christmas gifts for children. They even make the Community Center more beautiful and welcoming by planting and maintaining flowers and plants at the front door.
At the COY banquet and ceremony, the couple were attended by friends and family members, and received accolades from civic organizations and government officials at the local, city, county and state levels.
Chamber president, Alesia Davis, presented the pair with a plaque of appreciation. Proclamations and letters of recognition were read by the City of Mobile council member, John Williams; by County Commissioner Jerry Carl and by Alabama State Senator Bill Hightower and Representative Margie Wilcox. The McLaneys were also praised by Rev. David Hunt, pastor at Cornerstone Assembly of God; Donna Abercrombie, 1st vice president of SWMC Chamber and Larry Kent, former director of Tillman's Corner Community Center and cancer survivor.
The program ended with the McLaneys giving thanks for having been recognized for acts of kindness that THEY feel honored to have had the opportunity to accomplish.
