"Fiddler on the Roof" opens Friday, June 5, 8 p.m. at Joe Jefferson Playhouse, 11 S. Carlen Street in Mobile
"Fiddler on the Roof" opens June 5 at Joe Jefferson Playhouse, 11 S. Carlen Street, Mobile; it will continue Fridays and Saturdays, 8 p.m. and Sundays, 2 p.m. through June 21. The show is directed by Eric C. Browne with musical direction by Daniel Driskell and choreography by Kristen O'Keefe. The story is based on a book by Joseph Stein. The music is by Jerry Bock and lyrics are by Sheldon Harnick.
Set in Russia in 1905, the story centers on the father of 5 daughters and his attempts to maintain his family and religious traditions while outside influences encroach upon their lives. He must cope both with the strong-willed actions of his daughters as each one's choice of husband moves further away from the customs of his faith and with the edict of the Czar that evicts the Jews from their village.
Among the main characters, the large cast includes Gene Murrell as Tevye; Evelyn Watkins as Golde; Emily Ericson, Tzeitel; Christianna Mills; Hodel; Amanda Watson, Chava; Rainey Turner as Sphrintze and Ashley Park as Bielke.
