They participate in the Senior Bowl activities, help welcome visiting naval ships to Mobile during Mardi Gras, assist during America’s Distinguished Young Women finals week, and participate in Mobile’s Veterans Day Parade and other military-related events across Alabama.
The 2019-2020 USS ALABAMA Crewmates will be selected on Tuesday, March 26 by a panel of independent judges. Their selection is based on their application, letters of recommendation, and an interview process. Six young women will be selected to serve as Crewmates for the coming year. Each Crewmate selected will receive a $2,000.00 scholarship, payable to the college or university of their choice. In addition, the lucky Crewmate chosen to serve as Miss USS ALABAMA will receive an additional $1,000.00 scholarship and the Miss USS DRUM will receive an additional $500.00 scholarship.
No entry fee or sponsorship is required to enter. All uniforms and accessories worn during the official functions are provided by the Battleship Commission. Travel expenses for out-of-town activities are also provided. All appearances are fully chaperoned by officials of Battleship Memorial Park.
The USS ALABAMA Crewmate program was founded in 1967 as an ambassador program for the newly created USS ALABAMA Battleship Memorial Park. The program has offered more than 250 young women the opportunity to serve in this position and to earn scholarship funds to the college of their choice. The Crewmates have dedicated thousands of hours in community service to both Battleship Memorial Park and the State of Alabama.
