The Semmes Camellia Festival, first begun in 1949, was revived in 2013. This year, the event will be held Saturday, January 30, 10 a.m. 2 p.m. at Satsuma First Baptist Church, 4070 Wulff Road.
Visitors can view beautiful blooms displayed by professional growers and those who grow camellias in their backyard. They can see table-scapes featuring camellias, admire camellia-themed collections, receive information and advice from experts.
In addition, other locations around Semmes will also be included in this year's Festival: the Semmesonian Art Space at Semmes Public Library will includes some camellia art, Semmes Heritage Park will hold open house from noon until 2 p.m. and Camellia Park will welcome visitors.
In the photo above, taken at an earlier Festival, are Lib Dodd, who, with her husband, Tom Dodd, was a pioneer in the Semmes nursery business; Sarah Wilson of Semmes; two of the five Camellia Maids, Paige Warren and Mila Dixon; Walter Creighton, past president of Camellia Club of Mobile and Alice Creighton, holding a photo of the "Alice Creighton" bloom that Walter Creighton developed a few years ago and named for her. Mr. Creighton will again be showing his award-winning camellias.
Table-scapes and bloom displays are still welcome; set-up time is 9 a.m. on the 30th.
