While Joe Jefferson Players are celebrating Father's Day this weekend with the "Father of all Fathers," Fiddler on the Roof's Tevye, played by Gene Murrell, one must recognized that Tevye wouldn't have been a father to those 5 daughters without his wife, Golde.
So now, meet Golde, or rather, Evelyn (Evie) Watkins, who plays her.
Evelyn Watkins moved to Mobile 15 years ago. Since then, she has enjoyed roles at JJP (Mary in Jesus Christ Superstar and Charlotte in A Little Night Music), as well as at MTG (Schneider in Cabaret and several roles in Forbidden Broadway.) She was seen earlier this year as Alice in Walter Anderson Player's The Addams Family.
As a musician, Evie has performed with Pentatonix, Yo-yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, Joshua Bell, Luciano Pavarotti, Natalie Cole, Lou Rawls, Crystal Gale, Melissa Manchester and The Moody Blues, and has opened for Lynyrd Skynyrd. After playing in the orchestra for Fiddler on the Roof 6 times and earlier playing the roles of daughters, Hodel and Tzeitel, she has finally gotten the chance to play Golde.
Evie is principal bassoonist with Mobile Symphony Orchestra and is also a teacher with the Mobile County Public School System and the University of Mobile.
See Evie Watkins this weekend in "Fiddler on the Roof," at Joe Jefferson Playhouse, 11 S. Carlen Street, Mobile. The show is directed by Eric C. Browne with musical direction by Daniel Driskell and choreography by Kristen O'Keefe. The story is based on a book by Joseph Stein. The music is by Jerry Bock and lyrics are by Sheldon Harnick.
