Menotti’s first full-length opera was first premiered on Broadway in 1950 and was inspired by current events of his day, which could easily happen today. It will be performed in English by University of Mobile’s Alabama School of the Arts Opera Theater, which consists of university students and faculty members, with an orchestra of students, faculty and guest artists.
The story begins when a man is forced to leave his family to protect himself and others around him. He must wait and let time pass before he can return home. His wife visits the consul’s office to obtain a visa so she and their child can join him, but she is thwarted by the necessity for countless documents and papers. With suspenseful events, tragedy and and a surprise ending, Menotti’s first full-length opera will keep audiences on the edge of their seats throughout the entire production.
