Jean and Carl Nelson do a lot of mission work. And one of their favorites is one aptly "Appalachian Christmas."
"This project is a humanitarian one," Jean said. "We go somewhere in the Appalachian Mountains and take Christmas to the children."
They also take new coats, food, new blankets and other needed items.
"We usually minister to approximately 2,800-3,000 people in a poverty-stricken area," Jean said.
This the 20th year for the Nelsons to lead a "wonderful group of 50 volunteers into these poor areas of our country," Jean said.
The group has learned of an orphanage about an hour's drive from their destination this year, and the volunteers would like to help them, too.
Jean included a list of the children and their ages, as well as a Wish List for Christmas gifts.
Jean noted that she doesn't usually provide information publicly--ordinarily, it's sent just to the missions group.
This year, however, she posted the needs on social media. Of those who want to help, Jean said, "That would be great." If not, that's fine, "and prayers are greatly appreciated."
