Register Your Family Now for "Wings for Autism®" Coming to Mobile Regional Airport February 20, 2016
From Amy Odom, Public Relations and Development Director, Mobile Arc, comes the following information:
The Mobile Regional Airport is hosting "Wings for Autism®" on Saturday, February 20, 2016, with an estimated start time of 5:30 p.m.
"Wings for Autism® is one of The Arc’s newest national initiatives, and The Arc of Baldwin County, The Arc of Clarke County, Mobile Arc, and the Autism Society of Alabama are thrilled to bring this extraordinary experience to our area," Odom said. American Airlines has secured two 50-seater aircraft for this event, and online registration is required at www.thearc.org/wingsforautism.
Wings for Autism® is an airport “rehearsal” designed to alleviate some of the stress that families who have a family member with autism spectrum disorders or other intellectual or developmental disabilities experience when traveling by air.
This program provides them with the opportunity to practice entering the airport, obtaining boarding passes, going through security and boarding a plane. It also gives airport, airline, Transportation Security Administration professionals and other personnel the opportunity to observe, interact and deliver their services in a structured, learning environment, Odom said.
One note: This event is scheduled around the availability of American Airlines’ planes. "We encourage families who register to be prepared for the event to take about 3 hours and to eat dinner before coming or bring plenty of snacks for your family," Odom said. Event check-in will begin at 5:30 p.m. and there will be a short reception after all attendees have exited the planes at approximately 7:45 or 8 p.m.
