Semmes Christmas Tour 2019 is Saturday, December 14, 3-8 p.m. This is the 11th year for the event, which has been endorsed as an Alabama 200 Bicentennial Event for 2017, 2018 and 2019.
The Tour is presented by Semmes Woman's Club but really is a community-wide event that involves the aid of many individuals and groups.
Tickets are $10 pre-sale and are available at Meggie B’s Gifts, Semmes Senior Center, Second Impression and online @ Eventbrite.com. On the day of the event, the tickets will be $12 at Allentown Elementary School, 10330 Howells Ferry Road, the starting point of the Christmas Tour. Proceeds from the tour benefit Semmes Senior Center and SWC ongoing projects.
Each year, hundreds of people attend the event, leisurely touring the beautifully decorated homes and businesses, and enjoying the Taste of Semmes in which approximately 20 businesses will offer "tastes" of their specialties.
This year, there are three private homes, six businesses and an event venue on the Tour.
One of the homes is that of Joel and Meredith King. Joel is worship director at Moffett Road Baptist Church; she is choir director at Prichard Preparatory School.
The first thing a "tourist" might notice: The Kings' decorating scheme is quite different from the traditional decor. No red-and-green ornaments or wreaths, no tinsel, no Santa in a crimson suit of velvet.
Instead, the Kings' decorations are decidedly earthy with muted greens and whites, grays and browns. The tree carries out the same unconventional trend seen throughout the house. It's decorated with the primarily white ornaments that have a touch of silver and gold, just a little sparkley.
Two outstanding features of the home are the gray-striped ribbon bows on the mantle and the branches of eucalyptus whose fragrance perfumes the rooms.
Visitors to the Kings' home will appreciate the friendliness with which they are greeted at the door and the hospitality the two display throughout the evening.
