The Semmes Freedom Celebration is Friday, July 3, 5 p. m. at Mary G. Montgomery High School, 4275 Snow Road, Semmes. This annual event, presented by Orchard Assembly Church with sponsorship by the City of Semmes, brings good, wholesome fun to Semmes area citizens (everyone is invited); below is a short summary of some of the activities offered.
A Kids' Zone will include "Princess Tent," a Face Painting section and balloon animals. In addition, there'll be a Petting Zoo, an "amazing puppet show," inflatables and carnival rides.
Organizers describe the Car Show as having a variety of cars from "old antiques to new hot rods to Big Wheels" and promise that visitors will not be disappointed.
A craft show is on the agenda, as always, but something new has been added--Hot Air Balloon Rides, a chance to "see the City of Semmes in a whole new way."
Each year, the Semmes Freedom Celebration brings in a musical guest to perform for the thousands that pack the stands at the MGM stadium. This year, that performer is Chris August, a CCM artist.
The final feature is the big fireworks display, which lights up the night sky with color and excitement for a full 10 minutes.
Event organizers offer several suggestions to ensure that visitors have a terrific day. First, note where you park your car. Remember to drink plenty of water and to apply sunscreen throughout the day and don't forget to bring along a can of bug spray, such as OFF. And be sure to take children to enjoy the free games and carnival rides.
There are also a few caveats: Not allowed at the Semmes Freedom Celebration are alcohol, fireworks, firearms, ice chests, pets and soliciting or distributing personal products or materials.
The cost of admission is $2 at the gate. Parking is available on the MGM campus or at the Semmes Ballpark, if necessary. There will be a variety of food for purchase; events begin at 5 p.m. and end with the fireworks.
