By 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 12, the Semmes Senior Center was rocking with the guitar and harmonica music of the Semmes Senior Pickers. The concert and soup-salad-and-dessert luncheon to celebrate Valentine's Day and raise funds for the Center brought 60 or more senior citizens to the former Blackwell-Batson Estate at 9635 Moffett Road.
The Pickers gave the crowd an hour's worth of happy sing-along tunes--"You are my Sunshine"--a few toe-tappers, "Midnight Special," a couple of "Love Me Tender"-type love songs and a tear-jerker or two ("I Can't Help it if I'm Still in Love With You.") The group of guitar players consisted of Earl Hudgins, Don Jenkins, Chapman Walley, Bob McKinney and Buddy Flowers--talented musicians all.
The congenial crowd sat at tables simply decorated with cut-glass bowls of camellias in all shades of pink, rose and red, and enjoyed gumbo and Southwestern (a lot like Taco) Soup, green salad, very Valentine-y pink-topped cupcakes and tea or coffee. The meal was prepared by Robin Dixon, Shirley Dixon, Helen Mann, Linda Davis and Charlie Davis.
