The original purpose for the organization of Friends for Satsuma Schools in May 2011 was to inform citizens of the need to vote for a tax increase to help fund a city school system. That task accomplished, the group joined with other citizens in the community to support the new school system, which consists of Robert E. Lee Elementary and Satsuma High School.
The current officers of FFSS are Shirley Presnall, president; Sharron Upton, vice president; Marie Butler, secretary and Sue Speights, treasurer.
And Presnall said that since the organization was formed, "We have donated more than $10,000 to Lee Elementary and Satsuma High School and assisted in collecting an additional $5,.000 for REL from the Box Tops for Education program." Beginning this year, she said, FFSS will fund a scholarship for a Satsuma High School senior.
FFSS members are not afraid of hard work. To help the schools, they've painted curbs, cut down trees, helped organize school supplies, washed windows, power-washed school buildings and painted classrooms. They continue to help with the copying duties for REL teachers on a regular basis. The group has hosted three teacher/staff brunches to show their support of those personnel at REL and Satsuma High Schools. And they have also provided meals for the Satsuma Gators and band members before home football games.
On Saturday, March 7, 9 a.m.-2 p.m., FFSS will sponsor the 3rd Annual Swamp Fest on the main campus of Satsuma High School. "This is our major fundraiser and accounts for the majority of our operating funds," Presnall said.
This year, Swamp Fest will include a car show, arts and crafts booths, live music and other entertainment, food, children's activities, an art display from Satsuma High students and raffles.
