Now that the 4th of July holiday is past, maybe it's time to start stocking up on school supplies. That's what Volunteers of America Southeast is doing for children in need, and they are asking for your support.
VOASE'S 6th Annual Operation Backpack is going on now through August 4 when representatives will deliver bookbags filled with grade-appropriate tablets, glue, crayons, rulers and other supplies to the Mobile County Department of Human Resources. Children in need are identified to receive backpacks and supplies through DHR and area churches.
VOASE Community Liaison Janet Hyde said that helping children in need to start the school year off right is as easy as 1-2-3. With the motto of "Give Back--Give a Pack," Operation Backpack organizers suggest these 3 ways to make a difference in the lives of children in our community:
(1) Donate a new backpack (2) Donate school supplies (from the list below) and/or (3) Donate your time, i.e. host an Operation Backpack drive among family, friends and co-workers; organize the collection and the delivery of backpacks or supplies to VOASE, 600 Azalea Road or contact Hyde at 251-338-1294 or firstname.lastname@example.org to arrange for pickup.
A list of basic school supplies needed include backpacks, crayons, pencils, pencil sharpener with cover, color pencils, blue or black ink pens, red ink pens, glue sticks, highlighters, hand sanitizer, folders (pockets and brads), round tip scissors, plastic pencil boxes or pouches, notebook paper (wide ruled & college ruled), graph paper, spiral notebooks (1 or 5 subject), marble composition notebooks, 3-ring binders (1" or 2"), dividers for binders, lined index cards, calculators, rulers. All items should be new.
