Author and college instructor Maurice Gandy is offering a community writing and publishing workshop through the University of South Alabama Special Courses catalog. Called "Self-Publishing: Best Ways to Publish Your Way," the course consists of 4 sessions, 6-8 p.m. on Thursdays, June 4-25, and costs $95.

Whether your dream as an aspiring author is to publish an autobiography, novel, family history, poetry collection or how-to book. you can achieve success through self-publishing. Join self-published author and English professor Maurice Gandy on a journey from concept to manuscript to book signings and blogs. You will learn the advantages, challenges and pitfalls of this fastest-growing method of publication in the U.S. Whatever stage your book concept is in, armed with knowledge from this classm you’ll say in the not-so-distant future: “I published it my way. And it worked for me.”
Gandy comes well qualified to conduct this workshop. After 30 years, he recently retired from his job as a journalism, literature and creative writing instructor at Bishop State College in Mobile. He continues to teach American Literature (online) and senior-level technical writing as an adjunct English instructor at the University of South Alabama.
He was a feature writer for the Mobile Press Register for more than 20 years and, in 2007, had his book, "The Capocalypse," published by iUniverse Publishers. Gandy's specialty as a journalist was oral history, drawing on interviews with long-time residents, military veterans and their descendants to preserve stories, anecdotes and legends that would otherwise be lost.
Gandy is also an accomplished and respected speaker, having had more than 3 decades of experience as a speaker for academic conferences, civic groups and private organizations. He has been an Alabama Humanities Foundation Road Scholar Speaker since 2005.
